The Timeless Chocolate Chip Cookie: A Bite into History and Recipe

Ever wondered about the story behind the world’s favorite cookie? Let’s travel back in time and discover the delicious history of the chocolate chip cookie while also learning how to make this classic treat.

A Brief History

The chocolate chip cookie was accidentally invented in the 1930s by Ruth Wakefield. She owned the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, a popular spot for home-cooked meals. One day, while preparing a batch of chocolate cookies, she realized she was out of regular baker’s chocolate. Ruth decided to substitute it with broken pieces of Nestle semi-sweet chocolate, expecting it to melt and spread throughout the cookie dough. To her surprise, the chocolate held its shape, creating the iconic chocolate chip texture we adore today.

Nestle noticed the rising popularity of Ruth’s cookies and struck a deal with her. In exchange for putting her recipe on the back of their chocolate bar, she would receive a lifetime supply of Nestle chocolate. A sweet deal, indeed!

The Recipe: Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed light-brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups semisweet and/or milk chocolate chips

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour and baking soda. Set aside.
  3. In a larger bowl, combine the butter with both sugars; beat on medium speed until smooth. Add salt, vanilla, and eggs. Beat until well mixed, about 1 minute.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture; mix until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  5. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
  6. Bake until the edges are golden but the centers are still soft, about 10-12 minutes.
  7. Cool on the baking sheets for 2 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
